Independent Bookstore Day
By Danielle Sinon

You can never have too many books. At least, that’s what we believe. And what better place to find more books than in a bookstore? With Independent Bookstore Day coming up on April 27, we thought we would show you why you should look forward to this once-a-year celebration!
Each year, independent (or indie) bookstores around the country host events to celebrate with members of the local community on the last Saturday in April. Every bookstore is a little different so they all choose to celebrate in a different way. Many have live music, children’s events, readings, food, contests, and may even invite local authors. It not only allows regular customers to enjoy an event at their favorite bookstore, it also gives new customers a chance to see what they’ve been missing in their lives.
Since its birth in 2014, Independence Bookstore Day has been a huge success for local bookstores. According to collected statistics, stores who decided to participate for the first time saw an average increase of 200% in sales compared to the same Saturday of the previous year! This is encouraging and proves that independent bookstores are definitely not a dying breed.
Another reason to look forward to this annual event is, of course, what you’ll be able to buy! To make the day even more anticipated, limited-edition books and literary items focusing on Independent Bookstore Day are available for purchase. In the past there have been t-shirts, posters, notebooks, and pencil cases printed with quotes and illustrations to make this day even more special.
Looking to join the party? Here’s a list of independent bookstores hosting an event on April 27: https://indiemap.bookweb.org. With more than 450 stores nationwide, there is bound to be one near you!
So mark your calendars and get ready to celebrate all things books!
